The 10 main European airports

Despite all the problems experienced this summer, Barcelona Airport establishes itself among the most important on the continent

Neither industrial conflicts nor politics have prevented Barcelona Airport from sealing its place among the top 10 in Europe. That is according to the latest analysis by RoutesOnline, now that the August has ended, a key period of the year for airports. In terms of passenger capacity, London’s Heathrow Airport continues to lead the pack in Europe, followed by Charles de Gaulle in Paris and Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport. Barcelona’s El Prat airport comes in seventh, just behind Barajas in Madrid.

Frankfurt and Amsterdam are still ahead of Spain’s two main airports, with Munich, London Gatwick and Rome Fiumicino completing the Top 10.

Ryanair, the star of the summer

The RoutesOnline analysis also reveals the busiest airlines. In August, Ryanair was the company with the highest market share in Europe, at around 10%. EasyJet came next with 6.52% and then Turkish Airlines (5.61%). Spanish airline Vueling was in eighth position with a 2,86%.
