Catalonia exports more to Europe than any other part of the world. In 2014, sales to the European Union accounted for 64.7% of total exports. France, which is the destination for 16.4% of Catalan exports, is Catalonia's main trading partner abroad. It is followed by Germany (11.5%), Italy (8.1%), Portugal (6.8%) and the United Kingdom (6.1%). All five countries make up almost half of foreign sales.
The number of exports to Europe had fallen in recent years due to low demand on the continent and Catalan companies turning their attention to emerging markets. However, the economic upturn of 2014 has seen the European Union go from accounting for 62.7% of exports in 2013 to 64.7% last year. Just two percentage points more.
Emerging countries, among them Mexico (2%), Turkey (1.9%) or Brazil (1.3%), currently account for 23.8% of Catalan exports. That is 1.1% less than in 2013. The United States, with a 2.9% share of exports, is the most relevant country outside Europe for Catalan companies.
