Where can Catalan companies best triumph given their specialisations and experience? Each continent has its own idiosyncrasies and, therefore, each of them is interesting to different sectors, the reason why the strategic plan, Estratègia per a l'Especialització Intel·ligent de Catalunya (RIS3CAT), created by a joint team of the Eonomy and Knowledge Department and the Enterprise and Employment Department of the Catalan government, has identified the sectors in which Catalan companies have the largest competitive advantages.

There are seven in total: food, the chemical and energy sector, industrial systems, design, sustainable mobility, health industries and industries based on experience. To these can also be added three other sectors with cross-appeal: those pertaining to intelligent cities, ITC and sustainability or circular economy.

Africa and the Middle East
Given that the African continent is rich in natural reserves with a growing population, the sectors that can find most opportunities there are the chemical, resources and energy, industrial systems and health industries. In the Middle East, there are business possibilities in the renewable energy sector.

Latin America
In South America, the key sectors are sustainability, the food industry and intelligent cities. The latter is especially relevant in cities such as Santiago de Chile, where there is great interest in the use of ITC in the city, or Sao Paulo, one of the most dynamic cities in Brazil.

Asia and the Pacific 
In the Asian and Pacific regions, the most viable industries are those of food, health and life sciences, as well as the chemical and energy industries. Heavily populated cities like Tokyo, Mumbai or Shanghai are particularly attractive to businesses in the food and health sectors.

Europe 
There are four sectors with special potential in Europe: health, industrial systems, ITC and food. In northern European countries, such as Germany, Denmark and the United Kingdom, there is great demand for gourmet and organic produce.

North America 
North America has great potential in industries such as health, ITC, chemical, energy and resources. Examples are Silicon Valley, in the United States, which is a global hub that attracts technology and communications companies, or Montreal, in Canada, which is particularly attractie for the resources industry. Canada is the third country in the
