The Catalan startup Marteen Sports World is the only business in Europe that makes 100% organic and sustainable wax for snow sports, Nzero, which is applied to skis and snowboards to make them slide more easily. The firm, which was set up almost two years ago, has grown 20% in the past year and its product is available in more than 50 shops around Spain.

What's more, it has increased its exports this year to the point that they account for 80% of turnover, and for the next two years, the objectives are to double turnover and enter new markets in South America, New Zealand and Asia. "We have already tested our wax in Argentina because the austral winter provides us with more opportunities to sell out of season," says the founder of Marteen Sports World, Guillem Capellades.

A successful Vallès company
The company has the patent for its product in Spain and is in the process of obtaining one for the European sphere. The startup, which manufactures its products in the Vallès, has already reached production of 750 kilos of wax and for the 2016-2017 season estimates it will produce over a tonne of the product.

The company is currently looking for funding through Crowdcube with the aim of raising 60,000 euros in capital. "With this funding we want to start new lines of business so that our products are not only for snow sports," says Capellades.

"One of the lines will be other sports like surfing or skateboarding, and another is the application of wax to techwear," points out the founder of Marteen Sports World, which received the support of ACCIÓ through its Start-Up Catalonia programme. "This counselling allowed us to impose order and share our case with other companies to find mutual solutions," says Capellades.
