Universities around the world are now gearing up for another academic year. The students will soon be returning to the classroom, with those new to higher education starting out in their chosen subjects and institutions. This choice is often based on the reputation of each university. It is an issue in which the different universitiesrankings can play a key role. One of the most popular is the QS World University Ranking, which for another year has ranked what it considers to be the best universities in the world. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston heads a league table in which the first Catalan university, the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), is to be found in 166th position.
Of the top five universities on the list, four are in the US, with only the UK's Cambridge University managing to make the top five, in third place. In fact, of the Top-10 institutions on the list, five are in the US and four in the UK, with only Zurich's ETH (9th) breaking the stranglehold.
As for Catalanuniversities, after the UB, we find the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 190th place. The Universitat Pompeu Fabra comes in at 295th, just ahead of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, in 299th position.
