"Catalonia is a very good place to start a project. It has a good atmosphere and ambience, and the entrepreneurship and innovation that Catalan business has always had is now being picked up by start-ups," Jaime Jiménez responds when asked about Catalan entrepreneurial talent. Jiménez is from Seville and he chose Barcelona's particular characteristics to start Bag Movies, one of the more than 100 projects that VIA Empresahas presented in the past two years and that have been brought together in an interactive map that classifies them by sector and region.

According to Jiménez, the standard of living is the element that make Catalonia and Barcelona magnets for all these start-ups. "You can live well here and at a reasonable cost. London is much more expensive and in the end that influences you as a person and as a professional," says the entrepreneur, who has experience working in the United Kingdom and France, two markets he highlights.

In fact, the capitals of these two countries are in the Top 20 of the latest Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking. Barcelona is still not on the list of the best cities for new enterprises, but the latest study highlights it as one of the candidates to make the list next time round.

Barcelona and technology, the source of opportunities
Among the sectors with most future, the entrepreneur from Seville highlights e-commerce and technology. It is something that is demonstrated by the more than 100 Catalan start-ups on the map.

The category, Technology, networks and digital tools is the sphere with the most opportunities and makes up 22% of the projects included. This is followed by Health, science and environment (18%) and Trade, fashion and services (17%). These three sectors make up more than half of the start-ups on the map, for which they can be considered preferential or those that offer the most opportunities to entrepreneurs.

As for by region, almost 75% of the initiatives were begun in the city of Barcelona, which features business incubators and accelerators, such as Barcelona Activa, Incubio or SeedRocket. It is followed by the capital of Vallès, with 18 start-ups and Girona, with six of the 135 cases presented.
